Before cold weather arrives

Use each alarm’s test function and follow its manufacturer’s battery and replacement instructions. NFPA recommends monthly testing.

Follow your furnace and filter instructions. Replace disposable filters or clean only filters designed to be washable; use the correct size and type.

Move items away from supply and return vents. Keep storage away from heating equipment and leave combustion-air and exhaust openings unobstructed.

If your heating uses LP or delivered fuel, check the supply and arrange delivery with your supplier before severe weather.

Drain and store hoses before freezing weather. Ask a plumber how to protect outdoor faucets and piping for your particular setup.

Address drafts around windows and doors. Ask about exposed or unheated-area plumbing; do not block required ventilation openings.

Call to discuss maintenance or inspection needs before the coldest weather. Mention unusual noises, uneven heat or other changes you have noticed.

Leaving for the winter? A vacant home or seasonal shutdown needs a property-specific plan. This checklist does not fully winterize plumbing or protect every system from freezing. Call to discuss your situation.

For service planning, call (715) 748-4860. If a CO alarm sounds or you suspect a gas leak, leave the building and call 911 or your gas utility from a safe location.
